Overview

A Permanent Resident Card is issued to individuals who have been granted permanent residence in Canada. It serves as proof that the person has the legal right to live and work in Canada permanently. New immigrants usually receive their PR card automatically after arriving in Canada if they provide their Canadian mailing address.

The PR card is also important for travel. Permanent residents must carry a valid PR card when returning to Canada by commercial transportation such as airplanes, trains, buses, or boats. If the card expires or is lost, the person must apply for a new PR card or a travel document to re-enter Canada.

Receiving Your PR Card

New permanent residents do not need to apply for a PR card immediately. The Canadian government sends the card automatically after immigration if the person provides a Canadian mailing address. Important points: You must provide your Canadian mailing address within 180 days after arriving in Canada If the address is not provided within this time, you must apply for the PR card yourself The application fee for a PR card is $50

Eligibility for a PR Card

To apply for a Permanent Resident Card, you must meet certain conditions. You must: Be a permanent resident of Canada Submit your application from inside Canada

If You Leave Canada Without a PR Card

If your PR card is not ready before you leave Canada or if you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you will need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD). After returning to Canada with the travel document, you can apply for a new PR card.

When You Should Apply for a PR Card

You should apply for a PR card in the following situations: Your PR card has expired or will expire within 9 months Your card is lost, stolen, or damaged You did not receive your PR card within 180 days after immigrating to Canada You need to update personal information on the card Examples of updates include: Legal name change Change of citizenship Change of gender designation Correction of date of birth

Time Lived in Canada Requirement

To keep your permanent resident status, you must live in Canada for a minimum period. Requirement: You must be in Canada for at least 730 days within the last 5 years These 730 days do not need to be continuous, and in some situations, time spent outside Canada may still count toward this requirement.
