Overview
Family sponsorship is an important immigration pathway that helps families live together in Canada. Through this program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor eligible family members such as spouses, children, parents, or grandparents to come to Canada and obtain permanent residence. The goal of this program is to reunite families and allow them to build their lives together in Canada.
To sponsor a family member, the sponsor must meet certain eligibility requirements and agree to support their relatives financially for a specific period of time. The application process involves submitting forms and documents to the Canadian immigration department. Once the application is approved, the sponsored family member can move to Canada as a permanent resident and enjoy many of the same rights as Canadian citizens.
Step-by-Step Guide for Family Sponsorship
Sponsoring a family member to Canada involves several steps. The sponsor must first make sure they meet the requirements and that the family member they want to sponsor is also eligible. Important Steps: Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements to become a sponsor. Check that the family member you want to sponsor also meets the eligibility conditions. Submit the sponsorship application and the permanent residence (PR) application together. Pay the required family sponsorship application fees. Send the completed application to the correct immigration office mentioned in the sponsorship guide. If you live in Quebec, you must apply at both: the federal immigration department (IRCC) the provincial immigration department (MIFI) Once the government confirms that you are eligible to sponsor, the permanent residence application of your family member will be reviewed.
Types of Spousal or Common-Law Sponsorship
1. Inland Sponsorship Inland sponsorship is used when the person you want to sponsor is already living in Canada. This means the application is submitted while the sponsored person is inside the country. Key Points: The sponsored person can stay in Canada while the application is processed. They may apply for an open work permit. The open work permit allows them to work for any employer in Canada while waiting for the PR decision. 2. Outland Sponsorship Outland sponsorship is used when the person you want to sponsor lives outside Canada. In this case, the application is processed through a Canadian embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country. Key Points: The sponsored person usually waits outside Canada while the PR application is processed. They may still visit Canada temporarily if they receive a visitor visa. Once the application is approved, they can move to Canada as a permanent resident.
