Overview
The Super Visa is a special visa designed for parents and grandparents who want to spend more time with their family members living in Canada. Sometimes sponsors cannot apply under the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) because they were not invited to apply or they want their parents or grandparents to visit Canada sooner. In such cases, the Super Visa provides an alternative option.
Unlike a regular visitor visa that usually allows a stay of up to six months, the Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for a longer period during each visit. This visa is especially useful for families who want their parents or grandparents to spend extended time with them while still maintaining visitor status in Canada.
Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents
The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit Canada for extended periods of time. Normally, visitors entering Canada can stay for up to six months on a regular visitor visa. If they want to stay longer, they must apply for an extension and pay additional fees. However, with the Super Visa, eligible parents and grandparents can stay in Canada for up to two years at a time without renewing their visitor status.
Super Visa Duration and Entry
The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that can remain valid for up to 10 years. This means parents or grandparents can travel to Canada multiple times during this period. Key Difference Between Super Visa and Regular Visitor Visa: Super Visa: Stay in Canada for up to 2 years per visit Regular Visitor Visa: Stay in Canada for up to 6 months per visit
Income Requirement for the Sponsor
The child or grandchild living in Canada must show that they can financially support the visiting parent or grandparent. Important requirement: The sponsor must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on the household size. This requirement ensures that the visiting family member will be financially supported during their stay in Canada.
