Overview
A study permit is required for international students who want to pursue their education in Canada. Before applying for the permit, students must first choose a program and receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian college or university that is recognized as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Once accepted, students can begin the visa application process by submitting the required documents to Canadian immigration authorities.
Canada offers two main pathways for student visa applications: Student Direct Stream (SDS) and General Category (Non-SDS). The SDS program is designed to provide faster visa processing for students from certain countries, while the general category is available for students who may not meet SDS requirements. Both options require students to provide proof of English language proficiency, financial support, and academic documents.
Student Direct Stream (SDS)
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a fast-track process for students who want quicker visa processing. Students from the following countries can apply under SDS: India Pakistan China Vietnam Philippines To apply under SDS, students must meet some important requirements. English Language Test Students must take an English language test such as: IELTS TOEFL PTE The English test is important because colleges and immigration authorities want to make sure the student can study in English. For SDS applications, the minimum IELTS score required is 6.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). Documents Required Students need to submit documents that help determine the most suitable course based on their education background. These documents usually include: Passport Academic certificates and transcripts English language test results Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian college or university Proof of financial support Other supporting documents required for visa processing Providing correct documents and choosing the right course increases the chances of getting both college admission and a study permit approval.
General Category (Non-SDS)
The General Category (Non-SDS) is for students who do not meet the requirements of the SDS program. Students applying through this category still need to: Get admission to a Canadian college or university Provide English language test results Show proof of financial support Submit all necessary documents for visa processing However, the processing time under the general category may take longer than the SDS program.
