Overview
The Super Visa program is designed for parents and grandparents who want to spend extended time with their family members living in Canada. Sometimes sponsors cannot apply through the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program because they were not invited to apply or they want their parents or grandparents to visit Canada sooner. In such cases, the Super Visa provides another option that allows longer family visits.
Unlike a regular visitor visa, which normally allows visitors to stay in Canada for up to six months, the Super Visa allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay much longer during each visit. This visa helps families spend more time together without needing frequent visa extensions.
Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents
The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit Canada and stay with their families for a longer period. Normally, visitors entering Canada are allowed to stay for up to six months. If they want to stay longer, they must apply for a visa extension and pay an additional fee. However, with the Super Visa, eligible parents and grandparents can stay in Canada for up to two years at a time without renewing their visitor status.
Super Visa Duration and Multiple Entries
The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that can remain valid for up to 10 years. This allows parents or grandparents to travel to Canada multiple times during this period. Key Difference: Super Visa: Allows stays of up to 2 years per visit Regular Visitor Visa: Allows stays of up to 6 months per visit
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Super Visa Program, applicants must meet certain conditions. You must: Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident Have a signed invitation letter from your child or grandchild Have valid medical insurance Apply for the Super Visa from outside Canada
Financial Requirement for the Sponsor
The child or grandchild living in Canada must prove that they have enough income to support the visiting parent or grandparent. Important requirement: The sponsor must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on their household size. This ensures that the visiting family member will be financially supported during their stay in Canada.
